Panchalogam Dakshinamoorthy is a powerful image of Lord Shiva as a teacher or Guru. He sits under a Banyan tree, holding the Vedas in his lower left hand, blessing with his right hand, holding flame in his left upper hand and a drum (damaru) in his right upper hand. He sits cross-legged in a royal pose.
He quells a dwarf demon under his right foot. He is surrounded by sages who are eager to hear his sermons. He holds the Vedas, ancient scriptures, full of knowledge; he holds the flames, symbol of destruction of ignorance and evil; he holds the drum, symbol of time and language and articulation, of creativity.
Thus, both creation and destruction work simultaneously and on the same plane. He blesses us with “Abhay Mudra” ( fear not). Hence, under the guidance of a Guru, have no fear.
He sits under a Banyan tree, symbol of the complexities of the Universe. Interestingly, the Guru sits facing the Southern direction, the “Dakshin”, the direction of death. Man’s most frightening thoughts are about his/her death, about his mortality.
The Guru by quelling the dwarf of ignorance, illuminates our minds, and dispels our mortal fear about death. Hence, Dakshinmurthy.
