Mari or Mariamman in Tamil or simply Amman is the South Indian Hindu goddess of rain and fertility and medicine. In Tamil, the word māri means rain and amman means mother, but here it is “mother nature”. She is worshipped by people to bring rain and prosperity to them as their vegetation is mainly dependent upon rain; she also cures diseases like cholera, small pox and chicken pox. Māri is closely associated with the Hindu goddess Parvati and Durga as well as with her North Indian counterpart Shitaladevi. Goddess Mariamman is considered by many to be the South Indian Incarnation of Goodess Kali. It is said that when Kali went to Southern India as Mariamman, Bhairava followed her as Madurai Veeran. Festivities for her happen during the late summer, early autumn season of “Aadi”. Throughout the Tamil Nadu and deccan region grand festival known as “AadiThiruvizha” are taken for Maariamman.
